In the 1950s Detroit had almost 2 million inhabitants and was the fourth largest city in the US. It was the centre of the global car industry, General Motors were dominating the street situation worldwide and 8 Mile Road was not the ghetto it would within half a century become to be immortalised in a film made by an angry white rapper named after a chocolate coated peanut.
50 years later over a million people have moved away, leaving a shell of a city falling apart at the seams, a crime rate higher than any other in the country, and a lot more stuff you can read about here.
